The North Star Transformational Mentorship Program’s founder Jay Spain believes it was through his mentors, higher education, and martials arts training that transformed him from a youth-at-risk into a “young-adult-with-promise”. Mr. Spain has dedicated his life’s work through martial arts as a master teacher who has mentored thousands of youth and young adults via classes, workshops and events all over the world.
The culmination of Mr. Spain’s experiences and opportunities inspired him to create the North Star Transformational Mentorship Program in Arizona incorporating the five pillars of the North Star Transformational Mentorship Program are as follows:
Martial Arts Mentorship and Scholarship
Martial Arts Mentorship and Scholarship Pillar:
The Martial Arts Mentorship and Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for youth, teens and young adults with an opportunity to be immersed into a safe, encouraging and progressive learning environment with fellow students who are faced with many of the same “youth-at-risk” challenges. Each student selected into the program receives a scholarship stipend for at least one calendar year. The focus of the Martial Arts Mentorship is to provide our students a safe community for developing skill mastery, self-discipline, confidence, teamwork, sense of the importance of community and respect for ours through the martial arts, dance, and performance. Our students are provided countless opportunities to perform in public events like cultural and art festivals, School and sporting Events and live local and regional TV and Theater performances.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math:
A targeted set of North Star students are selected to participate in our STEM-based education program, which provides them with hands-on learning with real-world applications. STEM helps to develop a variety of skill sets, including technology literacy, problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, creativity, social skills, communication, flexibility and initiative.
The North Star Transformational Mentorship Program engages several local area STEM programs. STEM provides our students an opportunity to further develop their quantitative skills. Research shows that having quantitative skills increases the opportunities for more success in career growth and in one’s life.
The main focus of the Leadership Series is to provide our students access to the North Star Leadership Workshop Series whereby local and regional leaders expose our students to active listening, strategic thinking and problem solving methodology, which improves our students’ abilities of engagement, creativity, productivity and leadership.
Community Outreach is about contributing and helping those who are not in position to help them. Community outreach also allows us to influence younger generations to give back to the community, which helps the community grow in a substantial way. The North Star students are engaged within the larger community through our work with Casa Brazil, Cultural Coalition, local schools, universities, national sporting Teams (i.e. Phoenix Suns, Diamondbacks), theater (i.e. Herberger, Orpheum, Apollo), and companies (i.e. Intel, Nike).
In addition to the numerous benefits, volunteering gives our North Star students a sense of purpose and belonging. The prideful feeling of giving back and contributing to their community is unparalleled. Giving back is also a great way to get to know your community and its people. Giving back is a cornerstone of the North Star Transformational Mentorship Program Legacy.
The Foundation. The Work and the Legacy:
We envision a community where youth-at-risk and young-adults-with-promise are given the opportunity to realize their true potential and in-turn create a better community & world to live in. The North Star Transformational Mentorship Program is committed to this vision and will work tirelessly to provide a launching pad for the next generation to reach their North Star. The five pillars of the North Star Program provides the beacon of light to aid the graduated students who have gone the program to enhance the characteristics needed to succeed.
Mr. Spain stated that “there are countless students that have participated in the North Star Transformational Mentorship Program over the last 20 years are now doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and actors in featured films, Cirque du Soleil performers, and business leaders that are now also giving back to community”.
